Which EVs support V2G and bidirectional charging?

Bidirectional capability is not one feature. A vehicle can support powering appliances (V2L), backing up a building (V2H), exporting to the utility (V2G), or some combination — and support often depends on model year, trim and market. Use this as a starting map, then confirm against the manufacturer's current specification for the exact vehicle.

Read the labels first

  • V2L (vehicle-to-load): a socket or adapter that runs tools and appliances directly. Widely available and requires no site equipment.
  • V2H (vehicle-to-home / vehicle-to-building): backs up a property behind the meter, usually through a manufacturer-approved inverter and transfer switch.
  • V2G (vehicle-to-grid): exports across the meter to the utility. Needs bidirectional charging equipment, an interconnection agreement and a programme to sell into.
  • Many vehicles that do V2L cannot do V2G. Many that do V2H can only do it through one specific approved hardware package.

Platforms commonly associated with bidirectional capability

Vehicle / platformTypical capabilityNotes
Nissan LeafV2G, V2HThe longest-running V2G platform, using CHAdeMO with compatible bidirectional DC equipment. Availability of the programmes varies by market.
Ford F-150 LightningV2H, V2LHome backup through Ford's approved charge station and inverter package; a common reference point for building backup.
GM Energy vehicles (Silverado EV, Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Cadillac Lyriq and others)V2H, V2LBackup runs through GM's own home-energy hardware; capability is tied to specific model years and the GM Energy equipment set.
Tesla CybertruckV2H, V2LBackup via Tesla's own powershare hardware; other Tesla models have not generally offered bidirectional export.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 / Ioniq 9, Kia EV6 / EV9V2L, V2H on some markets and model yearsE-GMP platform ships V2L broadly; home-backup support depends on market, model year and approved hardware.
Volkswagen Group ID. modelsBidirectional on selected markets and model yearsRollout has been staged by region and software version — verify for the specific car.
Renault 5 E-Tech and other European V2G pilotsV2G in participating marketsSold with a bidirectional-capable charging package inside specific national programmes.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVV2H, V2LA long-standing CHAdeMO bidirectional plug-in hybrid, mostly in Japanese and European programmes.

Model availability and programme eligibility change frequently and differ by country and model year. Treat this table as a starting point and confirm with the manufacturer and your utility before committing to hardware.

What about boats and RVs?

Marine and RV house batteries are a separate and often easier path. They are typically owner-specified rather than manufacturer-locked, sit at a berth or site for weeks, and are increasingly built on lithium chemistries with open communication.

For marinas, boat storage yards and campgrounds, GridLynQ usually pairs those batteries with site-owned stationary storage. Stationary capacity is available whether or not any given guest's vehicle supports export, which is what makes a site's revenue predictable.

How to specify equipment without betting on one model

  • Install pedestals that charge every vehicle normally today, so the amenity works from day one.
  • Choose bidirectional-capable equipment on the circuits with the longest dwell time, so export capability grows as more bidirectional vehicles arrive.
  • Add site-owned storage to carry the demand-charge and resilience case independently of guest vehicles.
